How to Repair Bifold Door Top Roller Guide

If your bifold door is sticking, it's likely that they need some attention. They may require cleaning and lubricated or adjusted. The problem could be caused by a loose bolt on the top pivot, or by the top guide roller.

Remove the Door

It may seem complicated and challenging to put in the bifold internal doors however for DIYers with a little experience, it's actually quite easy. The frame's placement isn't a problem The trick is getting the doors to fold and close easily and precisely. Bifold doors are intricate pieces of machinery, and as such they could require some tuning up to function correctly. Take off the Roller Guide

This spring-loaded roller guides the mount on the top of the bifolding door to ensure smooth operation. It is designed to work with Kenna frames and will fit doors that are 1 to 3/8 inches thick. It is constructed of nylon, steel and plastic components and can replace a worn or damaged guide.

Remove any screws holding the guide to the roller using a screwdriver. Then, carefully use your hands to remove it of the frame. This may require some effort, so you should have someone else help you keep the door in place while you remove it.

Once the old guide is removed, carefully cut the remaining finish around the foot of the new guide with a sharp blade to cut it off from the rod blank. This will make it easier to remove and prevent damage to the new guide foot. Be cautious when doing this because the foot is very sharp and can cut or nick your fingers.

It is possible to use some force to remove the guide, but take care not to chip or break the foot. After removing the guide, you must remove any epoxy or threads left in the area where it was fixed. This will prevent future problems with the guide.

After removing the old guide, try out your replacement by placing it in its new location and then applying a few turns of masking tape or a type of guide tubing to hold it in the correct position. This allows you to double-check the alignment of your guide and spacing to make sure everything is set up correctly. Remove the Bottom Pivot

Bifold doors make a gorgeous feature for any home, but sometimes they need a little tweaking or adjustment to remain in great shape. While some of the more straightforward problems can be solved with the doors in place, others require them to be removed. This guide will show you how to take off the internal bifold door pins, rollers and pivots.

The first step is to gather your tools. Putting everything together ahead of time will save you some frustration later during the construction. You'll need a screwdriver pliers and maybe a wrench. You can buy a set of basic tools at your local hardware store at a reasonable cost. Also, keep some wood glue in your kit. This will come in handy if you have to glue one of the rollers back into place.

Once you've got your tools, begin by opening the bifold doors and then loosening the top track bracket using your screwdriver. Once the bracket is in place, you should be able slide the door off the top track. It may take some shaking to get it there, but it should come off the track.

The pivot at the bottom of the frame needs to be removed. Close all doors in the interior before you begin. This will be a lot easier than trying to work from the inside. If the bottom track still appears good it is possible to raise the door to take off the track.

This issue can be solved by removing the screws that adjust the bottom pivot, loosening up the top track mounting screws, and moving anchor/pivot.

A new set of top roller guides is a low-cost solution to a problem that may make your bifold doors difficult to operate. They are usually available at your local hardware shop in the door section. However they can be bought on the internet from a variety of suppliers. In addition to a new top roller guide, you will require a small amount of Elmer's wood glue which is sold in the big box stores and a squeeze clamp. The clamp is used to keep the area being repaired shut after the glue has been inserted and dried.
