WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are less valuable for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll a perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader lets players upgrade their gear by transferring the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item upgrade used to upgrade the item will be consumed and cannot be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enhancements.

The upgrader can be found in every major city, and is accessible at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every several weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the level of the item but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new gear. Upgrades like upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 ilvl will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item will cost you 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from item upgrader NPCs in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon or armor. The button will display the preview of an item upgrade's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot for the item and the current level of the Item Level Upgrade. For example weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade item cost 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or the crests used. Once an item is upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount for upgrading increases when more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete certain achievements or quests.

In contrast to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II there is no upgrader for items at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a positive and a drawback.

In Season 3, a number of new features have been added to the upgrade system. Once an upgrade has been completed to a certain item level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item upgrading level, will cost less. This applies even if those items come from another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is decreased, and the discount is affixed to all accounts. Similarly, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also cut and is not available until players reach certain milestones in their achievements.

Crests

For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to get their gear up to the highest level possible on all their characters rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another important modification is that crests have one usage therefore it's essential to use them properly. It is recommended to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear you can locate and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades.
